VR Laboratory Classroom – The Virtual Laboratory Classroom for the Professionalization of Chemistry Student Teachers

Motivation and relevance of the project

Dealing with classroom disruptions is particularly relevant in the subject area of chemistry, as in addition to general classroom disruptions (e.g. verbal disruption, lack of eagerness to learn), subject-specific disruptions such as violations of safety rules, accidents with or without injuries and/or damage to property, and emergency situations can occur in experimental teaching. Such subject-specific classroom disruptions can have serious consequences (i.e. medical, legal), however training these real-life scenarios with the aim of learning the appropriate handling of such situations, is highly problematic considering the possible legal and moral consequences. This highlights the importance of developing a training element that can resolve this specific and not yet solved dilemma.

Project potential

As an appropriate training tool for the professionalisation of teacher trainees, the VR laboratory classroom (VR = virtual reality) is intended to convey strategies and decision-making skills in dealing with classroom disruptions. In this context, the virtual room offers immersive learning situations in which bodily harm or damage to property cannot occur compared to a real-life simulation. It also enables linkage of declarative and procedural knowledge without the challenges that come with the handling of personal data from traditional training methods such as video material.

Delivery of primary aims & first publications

The project is based on the „VR classroom“, which has already been used and evaluated in university teaching, and which has now been extended to include a subject-based room with haptic elements for chemistry lessons thus creating the possibility of carrying out a student experiment on a gas burner in the virtual reality.

The results of a first pilot study as well as the portrayal of the project were described in a first publication in line with the 20th Symposium on Educational Technologies (DELFI).

A poster publication in line with the 38th Advanced Training and Lecture Conference of the Fachgruppe Chemieunterricht 2022 summarises the project in an according form.

Further project and research goals

The VR laboratory classroom aims now to be used in the context of teacher training alongside with the seminar „practical exercises in schools for prospective teachers“. The first pilot study is to be extended to include a robust evaluation of the competence development of the teacher candidates.

The project is being implemented by Christina Hildebrandt and Prof. Amitabh Banerji and was developed in cooperation with Axel Wiepke and Prof. Ulrike Lucke (Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science/Chair of Complex Multimedia Application Architectures).

An initial project presentation with a first project report was made by the Centre for Quality Development in Teaching and Learning (ZfQ) as part of the introduction of innovative teaching projects in 2021.

The VR laboratory classroom will be funded by the BMBF program „Kompetenzzentrum für digitales und digital gestütztes Unterrichten in Schule und Weiterbildung im MINT-Bereich“ in 2023

Within the BMBF program for digital STEM competence centers we could gain funding for the VR laboratory classroom project. Together with our partner IPN Kiel (Chemistry Education) and Prof. Ulrike Lucke it is envisaged to further develop the VR laboratory classroom to enhance the individuality of the teaching scenario. In this way, teacher trainees will be able to practice their planning competences, which is another important factor for teachers’ professional development.
